our history
To Know christ and to make him known
It has been the vision statement for the MSU Baptist Student Union since its inception. In a small corner of the YMCA building basement, Baptist work began at MSU in the 1920′s. Even from the beginning of BSU, there was a dream of those involved that someday, somehow, we would have a building of our own in which to minister. In December 1922, Dr. R.B. Gunter recommended to the Mississippi Baptist Convention Board that a building be erected at Mississippi A&M for the Baptist students. However, no action was taken for several years. In the early 1950′s, BSU Director Rev. Roy Isbell felt the time was right, but Mississippi Baptists faced two problems. First, the convention owned no land near campus. Second, there was no money to purchase land, much less building a building.
It was learned that a parcel of land owned by the late Professor R.N. Lobdell, was available on the east side of campus for $6,000. After careful consideration, the Mississippi Baptist Executive Committee agreed to invest $3,000 toward the purchase of land. The MSU BSU Advisory Board raised the additional $3,000 by selling land on the north end of campus. After 31 years of dreaming, we had the needed land.
Dr. D.C. Applegate, MBCB member and pastor of First Baptist, Starkville, worked hard with MBCB Executive Secretary Charles Quarles to secure adequate funding for the building. The original building was built at a cost of $120,760.35 by the Perry Construction Company of Philadelphia, MS. The 39-year dream became a reality, and it was dedicated on November 19, 1961. Because of continued growth, the center was expanded and renovated in 1984 and rededicated on Homecoming, October 13, 1984.
In May of 2016, the BSU relocated to the current building located at 755 Bailey Howell Drive.
